Weight-based jewelry pricing, worked out at the counter

Gross weight, stones, wastage, making and tax worked out the same way on every piece and every invoice, using the rate you set this morning. No calculator at the counter and no margin lost to a slipped decimal.

Weight-based pricing means a jewelry price is calculated from the metal it contains, not printed once on a tag. Smart Jewelry POS subtracts stones from the gross weight, adds your wastage, multiplies by today’s rate for that metal and karat, then adds making, stones and tax, so the price is right whenever the rate moves.

Step 1 · Weight

Net weight is derived, never typed

Staff enter the gross weight from the scale and the stones on the piece. Smart Jewelry POS converts carats to grams (1 ct = 0.2 g), subtracts them and shows the net metal weight. Nobody types a net figure that could disagree with the stones.

If your shop weighs pieces net, switch the product form to net entry in settings. Staff type the net weight and the gross is worked out from the stones, so labels and reports still show both.

  • Stones in carats or grams, per stone
  • Weightless stones priced as a total or per piece
  • Pieces in a set described without multiplying the weight
  • Gross, net, wastage and chargeable weight on every label and invoice you choose

Step 2 · Wastage

Wastage the way your trade quotes it

Wastage is added on top of net weight and charged at the metal rate, so it is billed as metal, not hidden in making. Each product carries its own wastage, and the salesperson can change it on the invoice when a customer negotiates.

Step 3 · Making & stones

Making and stones on your own terms

Making can be per gram (charged on the chargeable weight), a flat amount per piece, or a percentage of the metal value. Other charges such as polish or hallmarking sit in their own field.

Every stone is priced on its own line: per carat, per piece, or as a total. A stone bought in another currency keeps that currency, and the invoice can estimate it at the stored exchange rate.

ChargesExample
Making · $5.00 / g × 33.92 g$170
Diamonds · 2.00 ct total$1,700
Emeralds · 6 pcs × $15$90
Other charges$0

Step 4 · Tax & rounding

Two tax rates, the way jewelry is taxed

Smart Jewelry POS keeps two tax rates: one on metal and stones, one on making and other charges. Both are stamped onto the invoice when it is finalized, so an old invoice never changes when you update your rates later.

If you quote whole numbers, turn on rounding: pick a step (1 to 1,000) and a direction, and round the invoice total, each item, or both. The round-off is recorded as its own adjustment, not as a discount.

  • Metal tax on metal + stones, making tax on making + other charges
  • Rates snapshotted on each finalized invoice
  • Round down, nearest or up, in steps of 1 to 1,000
  • Your tax registration numbers printed on the invoice

At the counter

Fixed where it should be, flexible where it can be

When a piece is added to an invoice, its physical facts are locked and its commercial terms can be negotiated.

Locked to the tag

Gross weight and every stone’s pieces and weight come from the tagged product and can’t be edited on the bill.

Seeded from today’s rate

The line starts at today’s sell rate for that metal and karat, not the rate on the day the piece was added to stock.

Open to negotiate

Rate, wastage, making, stone rates, other charges and the line discount can be changed for this sale only.

Recalculated on save

The server recomputes net weight, metal, stones and tax from those inputs, so the saved invoice always adds up.

Questions

Weight-based pricing FAQ

How does weight-based jewelry pricing work?

The piece is priced from its metal weight rather than a fixed tag price. Smart Jewelry POS takes the gross weight, subtracts the stones to get net metal weight, adds your wastage, multiplies the result by the current rate for that metal and karat, then adds making charges, stones and tax.

Is making charged on net weight or on net plus wastage?

Per-gram making is charged on the chargeable weight, which is net weight plus wastage, the same weight the metal is charged on. You can also set making as a flat amount per piece or as a percentage of the metal value.

Can I enter wastage in ratti per tola?

Yes. Wastage can be a percentage of net weight, a flat number of grams, or ratti per tola. Ratti per tola is converted with 96 ratti to a tola, so 8 ratti on a 10 g piece adds 0.83 g.

Can the salesperson change the price at the counter?

They can adjust the rate, wastage, making, stone rates and discount on the invoice line for that sale. The gross weight and stone weights stay fixed to the tagged piece, and the server recalculates every total before the invoice is saved.

Do I have to re-price stock when the gold rate changes?

No. Product prices are estimated from the current rate whenever you look at them, and a new invoice line picks up today’s sell rate for that metal and karat automatically.
