How gold jewellery is priced

Jewellery is priced from the gold it contains, so the price changes with the daily rate. The calculation has five steps:

  1. Net weight = gross weight − stone weight (1 ct = 0.2 g).
  2. Wastage is added to the net weight: a percentage, grams, or ratti per tola (net × ratti ÷ 96).
  3. Gold value = (net + wastage) × the rate per gram for that karat.
  4. Making is added per gram of net + wastage, as a flat amount, or as a % of the gold value.
  5. Stones and tax are added last.

Shops using Smart Jewelry POS get this worked out on every piece and every bill automatically, at the rate they set each morning.

Questions

Gold price calculator FAQ

How do I calculate the price of gold jewellery?

Take the gross weight, subtract any stones to get net gold weight, add wastage, and multiply by the rate for that karat. Then add making charges, the value of any stones and tax. This calculator does each step and shows it.

How do I calculate the gold price per tola?

One tola is 11.6638 grams. Multiply the rate per gram by 11.6638 to get the rate per tola, or divide a tola rate by 11.6638 for the rate per gram.

What is wastage in gold jewellery?

Wastage is the gold lost or allowed for while making a piece. Jewellers add it on top of net weight and charge it at the gold rate. It is quoted as a percentage, in grams, or in ratti per tola (out of 96 ratti).

What are making charges?

Making is the jeweller’s labour charge, quoted per gram, as a flat amount per piece, or as a percentage of the gold value. Per-gram making is usually charged on net weight plus wastage.

Why is the international rate different from my local rate?

The international figure is the bullion market price converted from US dollars. Local market rates add import costs, duties and dealer premiums, so they are usually higher. Always price with the rate you actually buy and sell at.

How is 22K gold priced from the 24K rate?

22K gold is 22 parts in 24 pure, so its value is the 24K rate × 22 ÷ 24 (about 91.6%). 21K is × 21 ÷ 24 (87.5%) and 18K × 18 ÷ 24 (75%). Many shops add their own margin on top.
